About Zikoko

Zikokoย is Nigeriaโ€™s most exciting digital youth publication. Zikoko currently delivers five email newsletters, namely: Zikoko Daily, HER, Naira Life, SHIPS and Game of Votes. These newsletters combined go out to over 100k subscribers on a daily and weekly schedule.

Zikoko Dailyย is a thoughtful and exciting curation of the content we publish on our website Mondays to Saturdays. This newsletter serves our readers who ordinarily might miss our content across social media, or simply do not have the time to go to the website. Zikoko Daily delivers all the funny, exciting and important stories we tell every day. The tone of this newsletter is brief, witty, relatable and funny. The audience for this newsletter is any Nigerian living in Nigeria or abroad, aged 18 to 45.

Theย HER newsletterย is our community for the millennial and Gen Z African woman. It covers stories we publish under our HER category, yes, but it delivers these stories in narrative form. It uses relatable storytelling (read: gist) and a generally upbeat tone to deliver its content. The audience for this newsletter is African women aged 18 to 45.

Theย Naira Lifeย newsletter tells the story of young Nigerians and how money moves in and out of their lives. Its tone is witty and straightforward. Its approach to storytelling is detailed and direct. The audience for this newsletter is any Nigerian living in Nigeria or abroad, aged 18 and above.

SHIPS is the newsletter that covers all topics across the various types of relationships that can exist: whether as friends, lovers, siblings, platonic life partners etc.

Game of Votes is our political newsletter belonging to the Citizen category. It delivers the most relevant political and governance-related info in a light and relatable tone.

About the Role

We are looking for a Newsletter Editor to own these products. The right candidate will be an excellent writer who has experience with planning content. They will show a depth of understanding of Nigeriaโ€™s youth as well as be tapped into and obsessed with internet culture. They will also understand what it means to reach a young audience through emails. Bonus points if they are very comfortable around software products and have some basic knowledge of HTML and CSS. A physical presence in Lagos, Nigeria (our home base) is not required but a presence somewhere in the country is ideal.

What youโ€™ll be doing;

  • Taking full ownership of all Zikokoโ€™s newsletters, across all the different stages, including curating, editing, growing, experimenting and delivering.

  • Planning and executing the content strategy for newsletters on a daily and weekly schedule.

  • Working closely with other teams including growth, business dev, design and tech teams to ensure the newsletters are optimised for high growth and revenue generation.

  • Representing Zikokoโ€™s identity and energy to our external audience/readers in a creative manner.

  • Brainstorming interesting + ethical email subject lines.

  • Gathering data on and reporting the newsletters’ performances to track growth on a weekly basis.

  • Editing the newsletters on a daily and weekly basis.

  • Writing the Naira Life and Zikoko newsletter on a weekly basis.

  • Responding to reader emails.

  • Carrying out periodic reader surveys โ€” for feedback.

What makes you qualified for this role;

  • You are passionate about the internet, young Nigerians and telling great stories.

  • You have experience with email systems and you understand how to track newsletter performance with open and click rates.

  • You have a talent for curating interesting stories to build a singular product.

  • You are excellent at time management and are able to multi-task effectively.

  • You are obsessed with constantly improving things in big or little ways.

  • You have great interpersonal skills and a sense of humour.

  • Youโ€™re a creative writer and editor who understands how to hold a readerโ€™s attention from the first sentence.

  • You have experience with and/or understanding of the business of media.

  • You are comfortable with software environments and are able to interpret large amounts of data and draw conclusions.

  • You have some knowledge (beginner to mid) of HTML 5 and CSS.
