Girl Up Africa is seeking four (4) interns to join the programs department.ย 

Girl Up is a girl-centered leadership development initiative working to advance gender justice worldwide.

We believe that when girls and women are in leadership positions, they work to create a more just and equitable world for everyone. Founded by the United Nations Foundation in 2010, Girl Up operates a global network of regional affiliates and serves 200,000 girls in 152 countries.

Key Responsibilities

The program interns will,

  • Work under the supervision of and in tandem with Girl Up staff
  • Welcome and support the organizing, advocacy, and fundraising efforts of new and existing Girl Up Clubs, Campuses, and Coalitions in your region
  • Support and/or represent Girl Up in meetings with schools, partners, or other organizations
  • Attend monthly virtualย trainings andย bi-monthly virtual check-ins with Girl Up staff
  • Respond to all communications and requests from Girl Up staff in a timely manner
  • Plan and execute events, projects, and meetings benefitting your regionโ€™s Girl Up community
  • Submit ongoing reports summarizing your activities and achievements
  • Activate at least 5 girl up clubs within your region
  • Sign and always adhere to the UN Foundationโ€™s Youth Protection Policy and Girl Up’s Safety & Security Guidelines.

  • Stipend will be provided for this internship opportunity.

Girl Up in Sub-Saharan Africa (Overview)

Girl Up Africa has trained over 5,000 girls on advocacy and gender equality. At the forefront of the 256 Clubs in more than 25 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are dedicated Girl Up Club leaders who seek to ensure that girls everywhere can thrive and reach their full potential.

Through Girl Up programs, leaders can gain career guidance and participate in financial literacy workshops, STEM-related projects, and other programs to build their leadership.

Girl Up Clubs in this region focuses on advocacy, fundraising, storytelling, and organizing around:

  • Menstrual hygiene
  • Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Justice (SRHRJ)
  • Climate change
  • Gender-based violence (GBV)
  • Female genital mutilation (FGM)
  • Ending early marriage, and more.

As part of the youth-led movement, Girl Up Clubs in sub-Saharan Africa carry out their own initiatives and programs around issues affecting adolescent girls.

In 2019 and 2020, Girl Up Clubs in 11 countries, including Malawi, Kenya, Liberia, and Ghana, conducted trainings on how to make reusable menstrual pads, organized community pad collection drives, and fundraised to buy pads for girls from underserved communities.
