Background
The Nigerian agricultural sector significantly contributes to the country’s economy, employing over 35% of the workforce1
and accounting for over 20% of Nigeria’s GDP2 However, the sector faces some challenges, such as low productivity, limited adoption
of technology and climate change.
The use of Four Industrial Relation (4IR) technologies, such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial
Intelligence (AI) and Blockchain, has the potential to revolutionise the Nigerian agricultural sector3 These technologies, amongst
others, can be used to improve crop yields, monitor soil health, detect pests and diseases, and manage logistics4
Objective
Identify, demonstrate and mainstream applicable market-ready innovation that leverages 4IR technologies (UAVs, IoT, AI and
Blockchain) to enhance the productivity and sustainability of the Nigerian agricultural sector
The Agriculture Demonstration Project allows us identify, demonstrate and mainstream market-ready innovations that leverage 4IR technologies to enhance productivity and sustainability in the Nigerian agricultural sector.
Selected projects will receive up to N10,000,000 in funding to deepen the application of 4IR technologies in their work.
The Ministry of Agriculture will provide support to selected pilot farms and navigate a path to scale and sustainability.
Eligibility for the NITDA Fourth Industrial Revolution Technology Application
- The 10 selected projects are expected to be focused on the application of UAV, IoT, AI and Blockchain in different agricultural sub sectors e.g. crop production, fishery, livestock and forestry
- Project proposals will need to demonstrate the use of 4IR Technologies to improve agricultural productivity and sustainability in Nigeria
Selection Criteria for NITDA Fourth Industrial Revolution Technology Application
Applications will be evaluated based on these criteria:
- Innovations: Innovative use of 4IR technology to improve agricultural productivity
- Impacts: Potential to generate significant economic and social benefits for farmers
- Feasibility: Technical feasibility with a plan for scaling
- Sustainability: Clear sustainability plan for long-term success
How to Apply for the NITDA Fourth Industrial Revolution Technology Application
- Applications for the project are now open and must be submitted online by the closing date of December 7th, 2023.
- Successful applicants will be contacted not earlier than 6 weeks after the closing date of December 7th 2023.
Beneficiaries and Funding
The project will provide funding of N10,000,000 to each of the 10 beneficiaries. Beneficiaries will be selected based on their
proposals for using UAV, IoT and/or AI to improve agricultural productivity and sustainability in Nigeria.
In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture will support in identifying pilot farms and paths to scale and sustainability.
