The Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize, established by the Kofi Annan Foundation (K.A.F) and the Democracy and Culture Foundation (D.C.F), honors a young leader aged 18-30 and is presented annually during the Athens Democracy Forum. The prize recognizes outstanding leadership and aims to inspire more young people to contribute to the growth of democracy. An independent judging panel evaluates the applications and decides the award winner.
The Athens Democracy Forum (ADF) was created over 10 years ago, motivated by Kofi Annan’s efforts on peace and democracy, as well as the founding of the United Nations Democracy Fund. In 2017, Kofi Annan delivered the Aristotle Address and keynote speech at the Forum’s launch.
With the annual endorsement of the UN Secretary-General, the ADF has become the main global event marking the International Day of Democracy. Throughout his mandate as Secretary-General of the United Nations โ and later at the head of the Kofi Annan Foundation โ Kofi Annan worked to promote democracy. He was also a great believer in youth leadership and inclusion. He strived to facilitate the participation of young people in local, national and international decision-making forums.
