Facebook Finally Changes Name to Meta. What Changed?

On Thursday, Mark Zuckerberg announced the official change of name of Facebook to Meta.

According to him, “From now on, we’ll be Meta first, not Facebook first. Over time, you won’t need to use Facebook to use our other services.”

Meta, as we understand it, is the short form of Metaverse which Zuckerberg said better described what Facebook as a company is doing.

In recent years, the company faced a lot of criticism from users claiming the social app has lost integrity and put profit over safety.

But Facebook as a social media app is not the company, it’s just a fraction of it like Whatsapp and Instagram. Hence, they felt the need to change the name of the parent company to Meta to separate it from the social App.

Today we are seen as a social media company, but in our DNA we are a company that builds technology to connect people, and the metaverse is the next frontier just like social networking was when we got started.

We believe the metaverse will be the successor to the mobile internet. We’ll be able to feel present – like we’re right there with people no matter how far apart we actually are. We’ll be able to express ourselves in new joyful, completely immersive ways.

The cooperate structure of the company did not change. Facebook will now be one product of Meta, just like all others will be.

However, the company announced that starting from December 1st, it will trade under the name, MVRS.

The word “meta” comes from the Greek word meaning “beyond”. For me, it symbolizes that there is always more to build, and there is always a next chapter to the story. Ours is a story that started in a dorm room and grew beyond anything we imagined; into a family of apps that people use to connect with one another, to find their voice, and to start businesses, communities, and movements that have changed the world.”
