COP27: Youth Leadership Workshop Memo
Nigeria require stronger commitment to combat climate issues- NGYouthSDGs.
The Nigeria Youth SDGs Network (NGYouthSDGs) in collaboration with the United Nations Information Centre, Lagos hosted a one day COP27 Youth Leadership Workshop on Friday 4th November, 2022 for young people passionate about environment and social justice in Kaduna State.
The workshop which was attended by more than 60 young individuals in the state and from neighboring Katsina and Sokoto states was a success as many participants have noted, as an eye opener and a call for further engagements.
Muhammad Bashir, the Kaduna State Champion, Nigeria Youth SDGs Network has said that Kaduna state and Nigeria at large, must utilize talents in young people to drive meaningful engagements to combat climate issues and the increasing biodiversity loss.
He said that workshop is coming just before the COP27 currently holding at Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt as an initiative of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to provide avenue for the world to converge and discuss climate and other related issues.
He also said that young people have the ability to drive change that the future requires in terms of social issues and bring about solutions on how to handle the challenges of climate change while scaling up effective change.
One of the facilitator, Mr. Yazid said that partnership must be in place to achieve effective advocacy for the Goals, climate actions inclusive.
Also speaking, representative of the Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development, also the Director Youth Development Kaduna, Hajiya Maryam Mu’azu said “the training is an integrated goal that need to be sustained, as such the need for youth involvement in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.”
Mrs. Doris Kazama who is the Program Manager, Centre for Water and Environmental Development (CWED) while also facilitating a sessions during the workshop, said “humans must change for good and that will only bring about positive change in climate”.
She said that young people must identify governing bodies to collaborate with in order to achieve fruitful implementation of policies around climate and those directly affecting them.
Miss Martha, who also participated at the workshop said that she “wasn’t disappointed” the she left all to attend the workshop and described the event as ‘awe-inspiring.’
Miss Sarah also said “I have learnt that we need to collaborate to save the planet.”
Haj. Maryam in her goodwill message said that young people must be able to link all the 17goals as they interlink, noting that flood due to climate change today can affect students from going to class, thus
negatively impacting on their social right.
In his vote of thanks, Bashir called on the participants to amplify takes from the workshop and be champions in their community in order to mitigate changes in climate and in restoring the ecosystem while giving example of how nature-based solutions were effective in many local communities.
