African Epidemic Service (AES) Fellowship Programme 2025 – Epidemiology Track

Applications are open for the African Epidemic Service (AES) Fellowship Programme 2025. Africa CDC has developed a continental African Epidemic Service (AES), an elite workforce hosted and directed by the African Union. The African Epidemic Service has three tracks namely, Epidemiology, Laboratory Leadership and Public health informatics. The African Epidemic Service – Epidemiology track is a two-year competency based applied epidemiology training program that aims to strengthen the disease prevention and response capacity of African Union member states. The first cohort of the AES – Epidemiology track commenced their training on August 2024 and they are currently undergoing their field training in their respective host sites. The program is now accepting application for the Second cohort of the African Epidemic Service – Epidemiology track. Programme Details The fellowship include a two year training in applied epidemiology, with three months in class training in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and 21 months of applied training on a site hosted by an African Union Member State. The didactic training will be delivered in all African Union languages, while host site activities will be done in the language of the Member State. Successful applicants will participate in experiential core learning of activities that include, but not limited to: data analysis, surveillance system evaluation, and outbreak investigation. The AES Epidemiology fellow will have the support of an expert supervisor. Fellows will be also matched with experienced public health mentors who will provide support throughout the fellowship programme. Benefits Africa CDC will provide all learning and development materials and meet all costs associated with the fellowship, including travel-related costs (e.g., airfare, lodging, incidentals), stipends, hardware, and insurance. Fellows will be supported to ensure that they have the relevant software and sufficient Internet connectivity for online learning. Eligibility Applicants for the Fellowship must: be citizens of an African Union Member State; Be a youth as defined by the African Union, i.e., an individual under the age of 35. have been employed at the time of application in an African country with permission from a government institution to attend the two years training, with right to return post training; have a graduate degree from an accredited school of human medicine, veterinary medicine, or other doctoral-level training in nursing, environmental sciences, or other public health field; possess an MPH or equivalent degree with coursework in epidemiology or quantitative research methods; and have at least three years of recent full-time public health post graduate experience in an African country; Have a functional knowledge of the any of the African Union working languages and ability to read and write technical medical and epidemiological texts. FAO Interns will receive a stipend in a local currency not exceeding US$ 700 per month. The program also provides selected students, enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or postgraduate degree program or recent graduates with the opportunity to supplement their academic knowledge with practical work assignments in a field related to the work of FAO. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Their goal is to achieve food security for all and make sure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. With over 194 member states, FAO works in over 130 countries worldwide. They believe that everyone can play a part in ending hunger. Applications are now open for the 2025 RES4Africa Academy Technical and Vocational School. RES4Africa Foundation, together with its partners Strathmore University, AVSI Foundation, and St. Kizito VTI, and with the support of knowledge partner Enel Foundation, is launching the 37th edition of the RES4Africa Academy Technical and Vocational School (former MGA). The training sessions will be held in person from the 7th to the 11th of April 2025. This edition will focus on Micro-Grid Academy – Module 1: Decentralized Energy Systems (DRE) and aims to provide students with a comprehensive overview of a wide set of technical topics (i.e.: solar energy radiation, resource characterization for DRE design, mini-grid technological architecture, load profile exercises, community energy needs assessment and impact evaluation, case studies, business and entrepreneurial skills, etc.). Requirements The target beneficiaries will comprise 25 participants, among students, technicians, operators, managers, entrepreneurs and other RE professionals from all African States. Applicants under 30 and women of any age are particularly encouraged to apply. Program Details The course will be held physically at Strathmore Energy Research Centre (SERC) in Nairobi, Kenya, with possible field visits and additional practical training at other partners’ facilities also in Nairobi. Additionally, in-person classes will be complemented by online sessions led by international experts. Upon successful completion of the training, a certificate of attendance will be granted to the trainees who have attended at least 70% of the total amount of training hours, and successfully completed the final exam and survey.
